About Fleming Yachts
Construction of Fleming pilothouse motor yachts began at
the Tung Hwa yard in southern Taiwan in 1985 under the
personal supervision of Tony Fleming. All Fleming yachts
are built in the Tung Hwa yard and all the boats are marketed
exclusively through Fleming Yachts, Inc., a California
corporation with its office in Newport Beach, California.
Fleming Yachts do not sell direct to retail customers but
market their boats solely through their authorized dealerships
who are better equipped to provide service to Fleming customers
in their area. The Tung Hwa yard currently builds yachts
exclusively for Fleming. Production rate for the Fleming
55 is being increased to one boat every three weeks (12
boats per year).
Although the original hull mold was built 55', the first
boats were 50'. Starting with hull # 9 (which made the journey
from California to the Mediterranean under its own power)
the length was extended to 53 ft and later to the full 55'.
Hull # 127 was shipped in May 2002.
In
response to customer demand for a larger boat, work started
in the Tung Hwa yard in 1997 on building a larger version
of the 55. This is the Fleming 75 and the first boat was
shipped to California in 2000. She later traveled to the
East Coast of the USA under her own power - a total journey,
including side trips, of nearly 8,000 miles.
Tony Fleming himself started building boats in 1961 when
he joined American Marine in Hong Kong. This yard later
went on to build Grand Banks motoryachts and, in his role
of technical director in charge of all new development,Tony
was closely involved in the development of this well-known
boat. Tony Fleming is the president and owner of Fleming
Yachts, Inc. and he maintains a hands-on approach to the
running of the company including the design and construction
of each and every boat.
The Tung Hwa yard has been building yachts in southern
Taiwan for over twenty years. It is a family-owned company
with no outside shareholders or debt. It is situated on
a large piece of land twenty kilometers from Kaohsiung.
The yard has new buildings, purpose built for production
for the Fleming Yachts for whom they build exclusively.
The yard has the necessary skills and facilities to handle
all aspects of boatbuilding from lofting to testing the
finished vessel which can be placed in a test tank to check
out all the equipment prior to shipment.
Despite the increases in production over the years, Fleming
Yachts keeps its design team small and maintains a continual
presence in the yard.
